A good product or service does not sell itself. Sooner or later almost every founder and business owner runs into this: the professional side is fine, but enquiries are missing – because customers cannot find the offer online or do not understand what it is about. Entrepreneurs who start a business in Germany after moving here feel this particularly strongly: the market, the language and customer expectations are different. This is where marketing consulting helps. According to the Bitkom study “Digitalisierung der Wirtschaft 2025”, 75% of the companies surveyed name greater visibility to customers as one of the main benefits of digitalisation, and 82% see their economic situation as at least partly the result of missed digitalisation.
Below we explain in detail what marketing consulting covers, how the work is usually divided between the business owner and the consultant, what matters for your website, positioning and sales channels and what role funding can play. What marketing consulting covers
Marketing consulting is about how a company presents itself to the outside world: how do you make your offer visible, understandable and trustworthy for potential customers? Unlike an advertising agency, which mainly runs campaigns, marketing consulting usually works on structure and strategy. There are typically four building blocks at its core:
- Website: creating or updating your own website as the main point of contact.
- Positioning: a clear, understandable description of what you offer and for whom.
- Visibility: making sure you are found in search engines and on the platforms that matter in your industry.
- Sales channels: the routes by which visibility turns into enquiries and customers.
It is important to understand the limits: marketing consulting does not replace paid advertising or your own sales team. It creates the structural foundation without which visibility and customer acquisition do not work at all.
Your responsibilities and the consultant’s
A common misunderstanding in practice is that some business owners expect marketing consulting to bring in customers on its own. In reality it is teamwork with a clear division of roles.
Your part: the professional substance. You know your product, your service and your customers best – and you bring this into the joint work.
The consultant’s part: structure, presentation and sales channels. This includes, for example, building a professional website, packaging your offer clearly and working out which channels can bring your service to customers.
In practice this means the website is created in close collaboration – the business owner provides the content, the consultant the structure and strategy. And when it comes to offering services to customers, the consulting can support you, for example by building suitable sales channels. How far this support goes always depends on the specific offer and on individual agreements.

Your website as the foundation of visibility in Germany
For most companies the website is the first contact with a potential customer, even before a personal conversation. A good company website usually does several jobs at once: it explains the offer, builds trust and makes it easy to get in touch.
Marketing consulting on websites typically looks at the following points:
- A clear structure: who you are, what you offer, for whom and how to contact you.
- Plain language instead of jargon that only specialists understand.
- A mobile version: most visitors arrive on a smartphone.
- Trust signals: references, qualifications, customer reviews.
- Loading speed and a sound technical base, which search engines and visitors value alike.
Commercial websites in Germany must meet, among other things, requirements for an Impressum (legal notice) and for information on data protection (Datenschutz). Which details are required in a specific case depends on the legal form, the business model and other factors – check this before going live and, if in doubt, with a lawyer.
Positioning: how to explain your service to German customers
Many websites fail not because of technology but because of positioning. A sentence such as “We offer professional solutions for your business” answers none of the visitor’s important questions: what exactly is on offer? For whom? And why should they choose this offer rather than another?
Clear positioning usually answers three questions: what problem do you solve? For which target group? And how does your offer differ from similar ones? Marketing consulting helps translate these answers from the business owner’s internal, often very technical language into language customers understand – and, for those working in the German market in a language that is not their first, to take the expectations of the local audience into account.

Where customers should find you: search and industry platforms
A good website achieves little if nobody finds it. Visibility usually comes from several channels at once:
- Search engines: a website that is found for the important search terms in your industry and region.
- Google Business Profile (Google-Unternehmensprofil): especially important for local businesses and service providers.
- Industry platforms: directories, marketplaces and portals where customers search specifically in your field.
- Recommendations and reviews: visible trust from other people that makes the choice easier.
Which of these channels matter most in a specific case depends heavily on the industry, the target group and the business model. A trades business with customers in its own region needs a different visibility strategy from a consultancy working across Germany.
Sales channels: how visibility turns into customers
Visibility alone is not enough for turnover. Between “you were found” and “you got the order” lies the sales channel – the concrete route by which your service reaches the customer. Typical channels for self-employed people and small companies:
- direct contact via the website or by phone;
- recommendations from acquaintances or regular customers;
- cooperation with other companies serving the same audience;
- taking part in industry events, trade fairs or IHK (Chamber of Commerce) meetings;
- brokering through specialised platforms or marketplaces.
Marketing consulting usually checks which channels fit the business model and draws up a realistic plan – instead of tackling every channel at once and pursuing none of them consistently.
Common mistakes when starting with marketing
| Common mistake | Possible consequence |
|---|---|
| No website, or an outdated one | Customers cannot find the offer or doubt its reliability |
| An unclear description of services | Visitors do not understand the offer and leave |
| No visibility in search engines | Even a good offer goes unnoticed |
| Only one sales channel – and an unsuitable one | Time and budget go into channels that bring no return |
| Marketing only starts after launch | Turnover grows more slowly in the crucial early period |
Costs and possible BAFA funding for marketing consulting
The cost of marketing consulting depends heavily on its scope – from a one-off analysis to support over several months. For small and medium-sized businesses, part of the cost may be covered under certain conditions by the BAFA programme “Förderung von Unternehmensberatungen für KMU”: consulting on marketing and sales strategy can count as eligible economic and organisational consulting. Pure advertising costs and seminars are generally not funded. Applications are made via the BAFA portal before the consulting starts; the current rules apply to applications until 31 December 2026. For free initial guidance you can contact one of the Mittelstand-Digital centres across Germany. Among other things, they offer workshops and individual advice on companies’ digital visibility. The binding, up-to-date funding conditions are published only on bafa.de.
